Treatment-Resistant Epistaxis

Understanding Treatment-Resistant Epistaxis

Epistaxis, commonly known as a nosebleed, is a relatively prevalent occurrence in the general population. Depending on its location within the nasal cavity, epistaxis can be classified into two primary types: anterior and posterior. The anterior type is notably more frequent, typically resolves on its own, and, if necessary, can be readily managed. On the other hand, posterior epistaxis is an infrequent variant that often necessitates medical attention. In the conservative management of posterior epistaxis, nasal packing serves as a fundamental intervention. In cases where epistaxis persists or recurs, endovascular intervention or surgical procedures may become necessary. Both treatment approaches demonstrate comparable rates of success and complications, but endovascular treatment, when feasible, presents several advantages over surgical interventions.
