What is Hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus arises from an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the fluid that envelops and cushions the brain and spinal cord. Although it’s occasionally referred to as “water on the brain,” the fluid is distinct from water. The buildup of CSF can exert pressure on the brain, leading to tissue damage and disruption of brain and spinal functions.

The majority of hydrocephalus cases manifest in children, with some instances originating during fetal development. Genetic irregularities or issues during fetal growth can contribute to this condition.

Common symptoms

In cases of congenital hydrocephalus in newborns, an unusually enlarged head size is the primary indicator. Hydrocephalus occurring after birth can manifest with symptoms such as:

  • Altered gait or facial expressions
  • Headaches
  • Changes in mood or mental state
  • Difficulties in controlling urinary or bowel functions
  • Delayed growth in young children

Diagnosing Hydrocephalus

The diagnosis of hydrocephalus involves a neurological examination and brain imaging techniques like:

Hydrocephalus Treatment

Treatment may include administering antibiotics for cases triggered by infections. Frequently, the treatment involves surgical insertion of a flexible tube, known as a shunt, to divert excess fluid away from the brain. Alternatives include surgically relieving pressure without shunt placement or removing specific brain portions responsible for CSF production.
